Short Paper History: Spring 2009
Small-type rules
Tiny commmon typos and such
Lloyd Corwin
Mar 31 Topic: "localized strface plasmons in stained glass"
Comment: While an interesting topic, squeezing concepts of
plasmon, its localization, and affecting color may be too
much for short topic.

Shannon Friebel
Mar 31 Topic: Batteries based on biological fluids, such as blood,
saliva and urine.
3 Apr 7:38 draft TSO
4 Apr 11:09 draft TSO

Stephen Grossi
Mar 31 Topic: "Nanotechnology is the key to the future
development and survival of mankind"
Comment: That is not more exaggerated the NSF's first sentence
in its first RFP for nanotechnology: "Nano is a magic word."
I am delighted nanotech will solve the food, energy and
tranportation problems.
2 Apr 19:34 draft TSO

Chris Johnson
Apr 1 Topic: Quantum Levitation: The Casimir-Lifshitz Force
Quantum fluctuations of a vacuum can lead to levitation
effects when combined with materials having a refractive
index less than zero.
Comment: This combines two hard topics -- can it even be done
in medium topic?!

Need more specific sentence.
draft TSO 4/2 2pm
revised TSO 7 Apr 19:22 Why do ice skate glide?

Justin McLaughlim
Mar 31 Topic: "Quantum Computing using 2D Optical Lattices:
Addressing Individual Qubits"
Caution: Our experiencw with talks on quantun computing is not
good. Perhaps a carefully limited topic could work. But
simply addressing individal anything in 2D optical latticee
will be a challenge.
2 Apr 15.20 draft TSO
7 Apr 4:05 revised TSO
Draft paper too late for refereeing.
Alexander Pauli
Mar 31 Topic: "Skateboarders utilize simple machines and basic
physics to do extraordinary things."
[extraordinary too vague -- could it simply be the eye
can't follow motion & slow motion would make it believable?]
3 Apr 00:33 draft TSO
7 Apr 1:37 unreadable revised TSO
10 Apr draft
Stephen Poorman
Mar 31 Topic: "detection of extrasolar planets using the method of
astrometry (the 'wobble' method)."
Comment: Given that you will have to explain Doppler effect and
shifting solar spectral lines before getting to wobble may be
too much for short talk to class and paper for your sister.
2 Apr 19:55 draft TSO
7 Api 15.35 revised TSO
10 Apr draft
Maxwell Ream
Mar 31 Topic: Efficiency in
cycling: mechanically and physiologicallly
Philip Riegler
Mar 31 Topic: Construction equipment, base particle
vibration, and it's [sic] impact on structural integrity.
Comment: Is not "particle board" a term more likely to be
known to most (e.g., ply wood)? How strong a vibration would
I need to be worried about integrity of house or PRB?
4 Apr 16:36 draft TSO
10 Apr draft
Zachary Rudd
Mar 31 Topic: "Creatine provides energy to muscles
by recycling discharged phosphate groups"
Comment: Sole use in muscle? Does "provide" imply one-time use
or is creatine an enzeme?
2 Apr 22:21 Draft TSO unreadable
5 Apr 18:49 readable TSO
10 Apr draft
Samuel Shaw
Mar 31 Topic: "why Fiber Optics produce a cleaner
signal than electrical transmission"
Comment: "cleaner" independent of length of tranmission or
frequency spectrum of message. Might there be other aspects
that favor FO over Cu in some applications.
3 Apr 02.43 draft TSO
7 Apr 00:53 revised TSO:
Optical Fiber: high transfer rate, low info loss
10 Apr draft
Rashad Simon
Mar 31 Topic: Congo River: a hydropower option for kAfrica
Comment: Is Congo moe likely than Nile as power sources.
Are there unique opportunities to extract power more effectively
than with a single (or few) dams such as used on Nile?
2 April 19:00 draft TSO
5 April 00:52; 02:32 change subjec to mirror neurons on autism

Brian Stallter
Mar 31 Topic: Aeronautical companies designing airplanes with less
noisy sonic boom so they will be allowed to fly over countries
like the U.S. that have previously not allowed supersonic
civilian flight.
Comment: is this development already on military planes, or does its
implementation dramaticallly affect fuel economy and
allowables flight patterns over US and internationally.
What major airports are currently allowing such planes or
are actively consiering them. Or is this pie in the sky?
