Dear Colleagues,
A brief reminder regarding University policy on the use of alcohol on University property.
Alcohol may only be consumed in Campus areas that are "licensed", or where special permission has been granted by the Senior Vice President for Business and Finance. The former are places like the Faculty Club, Fawcett Center, Blackwell Inn, etc. The latter are places like academic buildings where function sponsors have sought and obtained approval to serve alcohol. In fact, we go through this very process each and every time we want to serve beer and wine at significant Departmental business, ceremonial or social events. The permission process is thorough. For example applicants must state in writing how function attendance will be controlled, how underage persons will be prevented from consuming, details of payment for the alcohol, etc. The event must then be approved the Chair, the Dean, the Office of Legal Affairs, and finally by the aforementioned Vice President.
This is serious business. First and foremost the health and safety of each Department member is vitally important to us. Secondly, we do not want to jeopardize our ability to legally serving alcohol at Department functions where it's appropriate and will add to the joy of the occasion.
There are numerous University websites that address this issue, one of the most helpful being comments and suggestions are appreciated.
