3335-5-08 Absence from duty.

Absence of any member of the teaching staff from ordinary service in the university, for any cause other than sickness, must be with the knowledge and approval of his or her chair or director and of the dean of the college and, if for longer than ten days, with the approval of the executive vice president and provost. For faculty assigned to a regional campus, the dean and director of that campus and the coordinating dean for regional campuses must also be notified and approve the absence. Sick leave is granted on approval of the appropriate administrative official when notification is given as soon as practicable, presumably on the first day of absence. (B/T 4/4/97, B/T 12/4/98)

Absence from Duty Guidelines for Faculty

April, 1996

Preamble

The Rules of the Faculty stipulate that "Absence of any member of the teaching staff from ordinary service in the university, for any cause other than sickness, must be with the knowledge and approval of his (sic) chairperson or director and of the dean of the college..."

In order to clarify and codify this rule, the College adopts the following guidelines.

Guidelines

The rule will apply to every member of the Columbus campus faculty of the college, regular or visiting, only during their on-duty quarters of service. For the purposes of this rule, the quarter begins on the first day of classes and ends on the later of the last day of classes or the day when the faculty member has submitted all course grades for the quarter.

Absence from duty should be interpreted reasonably to include (1) any circumstance which prevents the faculty member from meeting a formal obligation of his/her employment (such as a class meeting), (2) absence from Central Ohio, and (3) engagement off campus in consulting or similar remunerative activity.

Faculty members will be expected to make arrangements for fulfilling their obligations in their absence and should supply information concerning these arrangements on an absence from duty form. Faculty members should also provide a brief description or explanation of the nature of the absence on this form. The absence from duty form should be submitted in a timely manner for prior approval by the chair and the dean, except that absences totaling no more than ten working days in a quarter will not require the dean's approval.

Occasional brief absences for personal reasons will normally be approved. Absence from duty totaling no more than ten working days in any quarter will normally be approved if the absence is for professional activities which contribute to institutional goals. Absences of more than ten working days in one quarter will be considered on an individual basis, will require a higher level of justification, and will be weighed against competing institutional needs.
