3. Based on an index developed by the Association of Research Libraries to measure the relative size of university libraries. The index takes into account the number of volumes held, number of volumes added during the previous fiscal year, number of current serials, total operating expenditures, and size of "permanent" staff, a figure that includes professional and support workers and excludes student assistants. The index does not measure a library's services, the quality of its collections, or its success in meeting the needs of users.
