There are two mail servers at OSU physics, named ohstpy.mps.ohio-state.edu
and delos.mps.ohio-state.edu. The choice of which mail server you use is
somewhat arbitrary. If you're confused about how you should configure your
mail client of choice, contact us.
It's a good idea to secure your mail connection to the server to protect
your account and data. The steps you take to secure the connection are
dependent on what mail client you use. Here are the steps for the most common
clients:
- Eudora 5.1 and later:
Go to the Tools menu and click Options. Choose the "Sending Mail"
category. Check the "Allow authentication" box. Ensure that the
"Secure Sockets when Receiving" pull-down list is set to "If Available,
STARTTLS" or "Required, STARTTLS". Choose the "Checking Mail" category.
Ensure that the "Secure Sockets when Receiving" pull-down list is set to
"If Available, STARTTLS" or "Required, STARTTLS". Click OK.
- Outlook Express 6 and later:
Go to the Tools menu and click "Accounts...". Click the Mail tab,
select the ohstpy mail account, and click Properties. Click the Servers
tab and check the "My server requires authentication" box. Click the
Advanced tab and under both the "Outgoing mail" and "Incoming mail"
groups, check the boxes labeled "This server requires a secure
connection (SSL)". Click OK, then click Close.
- Outlook 2002 and later:
Go to the Tools menu and click "Email accounts...". Under E-mail,
select the "View or change existing e-mail accounts" radio button and
click "Next >". Select the ohstpy mail account and click "Change...".
Click "More Settings...". Click the "Outgoing Server" tab and check the
"My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" box. Click the
Advanced tab and under both the "Outgoing server" and "Incoming server"
groups, check the boxes labeled "This server requires a secure
connection (SSL)". Change the port number for the outgoing SSL to
465. Click OK, click "Next >" and then click Finish.
- Netscape 6.2 and later:
Go to the Edit menu and click "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings".
Click Server Settings. In the "Server Settings" group, check the "Use
secure connection (SSL)" box. Click "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" and check
the "Use name and password" box. In the "Use secure connection (SSL)"
radio button group, select either "When available" or Always. Click OK.
