Installing McAfee VirusScan 4.5

You can get the software off the PCF Disk. After you finish the initial install, go to the icon in the systray that looks like a magnifying glass. This is the VirusScan Console. Now stay with me, because this is really important.

• Double-click on the VirusScan Console icon, and the console window will open.
• Right-click on AutoUpgrade and select Properties.
• Click on Configure.
• Click on Add.
• For Site Name, type in OSU.
• The FTP Computer Name should be entered as vscan.osu.edu/pub/vscan.
• After "OK-ing" the Task Properties window, pick the Schedule tab. Check the Enable box, and pick a suitable time once a week to do upgrades.
• Pick the Program tab, and click on Run Now.

A note on Norton

The Norton Anti-Virus suite of programs is equivalent to McAfee's product. Norton comes free with lots of new hardware; however, you should undestand that you will have to pay for LiveUpdates after a certain free period. And you're going to need those LiveUpdates. This department's LAN, (The Smith Lab building network), is no place to plug in an unprotected machine. If you don't have the most recent version of McAfee's or Norton's anti-virus data and engine, you will suffer attack. Please heed our warnings. We speak from experience.
