Public VMScluster Nodes (Revised May 14, 1997) There are five public nodes in the VMScluster, plus twelve privately-owned machines. The VMScluster contains new machines of the Alpha architecture, and older machines of the VAX architecture; we have migrated from VAX to Alpha, but expect to continue VAX support for several more years. Two of our public machines are located in the computer room (2097 Smith Lab) to serve all our customers: PHYAS1 is a 512 megabyte AlphaServer 2100 5/250, which provides login service, file service, and most network services for the entire VMS community. Six Alpha workstations also boot from this machine. OHSTPW is a 128 megabyte VAXstation 4000/90, which runs a few pieces of VAX software not yet converted to Alpha. Eleven VAX workstations also boot from this machine. Two additional workstations are provided in public areas: PHYALC (an Alpha in SM 4035) and OHSTPZ (a VAXstation in SM 2097). One additional machine is in the Computer Facility staff area (OHSTPX in SM 2180A). Collectively, our VMScluster is known as "OHSTPY" on DECnet, Lat, and AppleTalk; it is known as "ohstpy.mps.ohio-state.edu" on the Internet. Internet mail is addressed to "user@mps.ohio-state.edu". These cluster names are "permanent", unchanged since 1987 (a very long time in computing). Please use these names, rather than the (temporary) names of individual machines; long-term stability will be greatly increased. (Since 1987, six separate generations of computers have provided OHSTPY, with as few as one and as many as three computers answering as OHSTPY.)
