A 01: The Vibrating String

Investigate the modes of vibration of vibrating wires. Measure the characteristic frequencies as a function of the tension in the wire and of the mass per unit length. Try to determine how properties of the real wire, such as stiffness and damping, may cause the characteristic frequencies to differ from those of an ideal wire.

You will also learn how to use the HP 5315B Universal Frequency Counter, and about the importance of impedance matching.
