This thesis presents the results of a measurement of polarization-transfer
coefficients
using the quasifree
reaction on
and
at
MeV for several different momentum transfers.
These measurements are then used to extract separate
longitudinal
and transverse
isovector spin responses for comparison to
the results of various theoretical calculations. The data were obtained
using the new INPOL ( Indiana Neutron Polarimeter)
facility at IUCF ( Indiana University Cyclotron
Facility) during the years of 1995 and 1996. The remainder of this
chapter will present a description of the fundamental importance of these
measurements, a review of previous experiments, and the motivation behind
this new experiment.
