FORMALISM

Though this be madness,
yet there be method in it

-

William Shakespeare
Hamlet, Act II, Scene 2

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the theoretical formalism in which the experimental results will be presented. A derivation of the important polarization observables from basic scattering theory will be made in the plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) to clarify the physics contained therein. Also, the relationship between the laboratory frame observables and the longitudinal and transverse pieces of the scattering amplitude will be shown explicitly to illustrate the ability of these polarization transfer experiments to extract quantities of interest.
