Physics H131: Problem Set #5
Due: Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 in class
or by 5pm in the PRB main office.
Check the H131 web page for hints and suggestions.
Full credit: 100 points
The problems on this set are worth 135 points if you include the
"challenge" problem (25 pts.). For full credit you must solve enough
problems to obtain 100 points. If you earn more than 100 points, the
extra points can help you offset points lost elsewhere.
You can (and should!) discuss the problems with other students of your
class, but you must write down the solutions in your own words.
Short-Answer Questions
Give a short (not more than two sentences) but accurate explanation
for each problem or question!
- Two-minute problem: C7T.3 (p.131) [5 pts.]
- Two-minute problem: C8T.3 (p.149) [5 pts.]
- Two-minute problem: C8T.8 (p.149) [10 pts.]
Chapter C6 Problem
- Rich-Context: C6R.2 (p.114) [20 pts.]
Chapter C7 Problems
- Synthetic: C7S.6 (p.132) [15 pts.]
- Synthetic: C7S.7 (p.132) [15 pts.] (See Example C7.1 on p.126.)
- Rich-Context: C7R.2 (p.133) [20 pts.]
Chapter C8 Problems
- Basic: C8B.6 (p.150) [10 pts.]
- Basic: C8B.7 (p.150) [10 pts.]
"The Challenge" (Extra Credit)
- Advanced: C7A.1 (p.133) [25 pts.]
This is a more difficult (but very interesting) problem to challenge
the most advanced students! By using calculus, it derives a very
important general result which we will use (but not derive) later
in the course.
