Physics H131: Problem Set #4
Due: Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 in class or by
5pm in the PRB main office.
Check the H131 web page for hints and suggestions.
Full credit: 100 points
The problems on this set are worth 135 points if you include the
"challenge" problem (30 pts.). For full credit you must solve enough
problems to obtain 100 points. If you earn more than 100 points, the
extra points can help you offset points lost elsewhere.
You can (and should!) discuss the problems with other students of your
class, but you must write down the solutions in your own words.
Short-Answer Questions
Give a short (not more than two sentences) but accurate explanation
for each problem or question!
- Two-minute problem: C5T.9 (p.95) [10 pts.]
- Two-minute problem: C6T.3 (p.112) [10 pts.]
Chapter C5 Problems
- Synthetic: C5S.4 (p.96) [10 pts.]
- Synthetic: C5S.8 (p.96) [25 pts.]
For this problem, please follow the general problem solution
framework described in Chapter 5. Your solution should be very
explicit and look similar to the one given in Example C5.2 on
pp.90/91. It should contain all the components of this master
solution ("before" and "after" sketches, a conceptual model diagram
showing all the interactions affecting the participating objects,
a list of unknown and known quantities, equations which allow
to compute the unknowns (count their respective numbers),
a prose model, and the solution). Full credit of 25 pts. will
only be given to solutions which include all the above.
Chapter C6 Problems
- Basic: C6B.1 (p.113) [10 pts.]
- Synthetic: C6S.1 (page 113) [15 pts.]
(If you answer "no" to the last question,
please give your own solution as to how much the kinetic energy
increases.)
- Synthetic: C6S.6 (p.113) [25 pts.]
For this problem, please follow the general problem solution
framework (see instructions for Problem C5S.8 above).
"The Challenge" (Extra Credit)
- Advanced: C5A.1 (p.97) [30 pts.]
This is a more difficult (but very interesting) problem to challenge
the most advanced students!
