General Information about Physics H131
- Course title:
- Particles in Motion
- Text:
- "Six Ideas
that Shaped Physics" (Second Edition), Units C and N, by
Thomas A. Moore
There are errata pages for
Unit C and
Unit N (second edition, 2003).
For the labs you'll need a lab notebook and the
"Physics 131 Laboratory Activities and Worksheets, 3rd
edition"
manual.
- Material:
- Physics H131 will cover all or most of the material in units C and N
of the text (about three chapter per week).
We will learn about one of the most fundamental concepts
in Physics, namely conservation laws. We will see that many aspects
of the motion of particles can be understood from these conservation
laws alone. Then, we will move on to an even more refined description of
the motion of particles.
The basic topics are:
- Momentum and Momentum Conservation [C1-C5]
- Different Forms of Energy and Energy Conservation [C6-C12]
- Angular Momentum and Angular Momentum Conservation [C13-C14]
- Newton's Laws [N1]
- Vector Calculus [N2]
- Forces and Motion [N3-N4]
- Statics [N5]
- Constrained Motion [N6-N8]
- Non-inertial frames [N9]
- Projectile Motion, Oscillatory and Orbital Motion
[N10-N13]

- Schedule:
- There will typically be lecture classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
- Tuesdays and Thursdays will usually be used for recitation, problem solving,
and short quizzes (every Thursday).
- Problem sets will be assigned on Fridays (due following Tuesday
in class) and Tuesdays (due following Friday in class). They usually
deal with one or two chapters of the text -- see
Assignments.
- Students are expected to have read the relevant chapters of the text
before they are dealt with in class -- see
Assignments.
- There will be no classes on 11 Nov (Veteran's Day), 27 Nov
(Thanksgiving Day), and 28 Nov (Columbus Day).
- The midterm is on October 23 in the evening.
The final exam is on December 10 between 1:30pm and 5:30pm (any
2-hour block).
- [Note: The schedule is subject to change at short notice!]
- Grading
- Assigned homework problems, 2 sets per week (drop 2) [25%]
- Quizzes, 1 per week (drop 2) [20%]
- Midterm [20%]
- Final [25%]
- Lab [10%] -- Note: a passing grade for the lab is required
for passing the course!
