Spring, 2013

Welcome to the Physics 6810 Computational Physics home page!

URL: http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~ntg/6810/compphys.php

The course information is available here plus lots of supplementary
info. Please check this page regularly.

- 18-Apr-2013 --- Session 17 notes are available below under 1094 Sessions.
- 17-Apr-2013 --- New and improved Session 16 notes are available. There is now a stability analysis for the diffusion PDE.
- 05-Apr-2013 --- Assignment #4, which is just a progress report on your project, is available under Assigned problems, hints, and solutions.
- 04-Apr-2013 --- The official due date of the projects is Monday, April 29. This is to allow enough time to evaluate the projects before grades are due.
- 09-Mar-2013 --- *** Using Python on Linux machines: you must use /usr/bin/python to invoke Python. If you just type "python run_area_cmdline2.py" you will get /usr/local/bin/python, which is the 32-bit version (and you need the 64-bit version to run numpy and other things).
- 24-Feb-2013 --- Other good sources of project ideas are the
exercises at the end of the chapter in the
2012 Hjorth-Jensen lectures. For example, differential equation
problems like exercise 8.1 on neutron stars, a matrix solution
of the Schrodinger equation for two electrons in a
three-dimensional harmonic oscillator with Coulomb interaction (exercise 7.1), more Schrodinger equation projects in the chapter 9 exercises,
*many*Monte Carlo applications in Chapters 11-14, and Hartree-Fock in Chapter 15. - 19-Feb-2013 --- A
partial project list from
past years is available (with new updates soon).
The eTextBook
*A Survey of Computational Physics*by Landau, Paez, and Bordeianu is a good source of projects (e.g., any of the Explorations). - 21-Jan-2013 --- Xqcd presents one (cynical) view of how to write good code. Hopefully we can do better!

The Mathematica example notebooks used in the graduate Math Methods course are available. Take a look!

If the notebook doesn't open automatically in Mathematica when you click on the link, "right click" to save it first (to the Desktop or a session folder) and start it from within Mathematica.
