Who We Are

Current Members

Dr. Linn Van Woerkom,
Principal Investigator
B.S., USC, 1982
M.A., USC, 1984
Ph.D., USC, 1987
Professor Van Woerkom is the head of an Atomic, Molecular, and Optics (AMO) group at the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. His group studies ultrafast, high-intensity laser/matter interactions.
Mark Walker B.S., Mount Union College, 1993
M.S., The Ohio State University, 1998
Currently Mark is the senior graduate student in the Van Woerkom Group, studying molecular ionization and dissociation in strong laser fields.
Glen Gillen B.S., Denison University, 1994
M.S., Miami University, 1996
M.A.T., Miami University, 1997
Currently Glen Gillen is a graduate student in the Van Woerkom Group. He is studying the interaction of high-intensity light with alkaline earth atoms in atomic beams.
Stuart Brand B.S., The Ohio State University, 1997 Stuart Brand is a graduate student and has recently joined the Van Woerkom Group.
Ryan Barnett Undergraduate, The Ohio State University Ryan Barnett is currently an undergraduate student in the Van Woerkom Group, and studies Frequency Resolved Optical Gating (FROG).

Other (Secret) Member

Joe Demers B.S.,University of Dayton, 1991 M.S.,Wright State University, 1994 Joe Demers is currently a graduate student in the DeLucia Group. Although Joe is not an official member of the Van Woerkom Group, he is a valuable colleague and resource for computer, lab equipment, and automotive information.

Graduates

James Norby Ph.D., Wyoming Universtiy, 1995 While working in the Van Woerkom Group, Dr. James Norby utilized a muli-layer X-Ray mirror to image soft X-rays from plasmas. Currently, Dr. Norby is a custom laser designer for Continuum.
Peter Hansch Vordiplom, Bonn University, 1992
M.S., The Ohio State University, 1995
M.B.A., The Ohio State University, 1997
Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 1997
While with the Van Woerkom Group, Dr. Peter Hansch developed and studied the latest method of ultrafast, high-intensity spectroscopy, Intensity Selective Scanning (ISS). Dr. Hansch is currently a consultant working for the Siemens Corporation.
Son Evans B.A., Berea College, 1990
M.S., The Ohio State University, 1994
Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 1997
While with the Van Woerkom Group, Dr. Son Evans studied High Order Harmonic Generation (HOHG) in both atoms and molecules using ultrashort, high-intensity light pulses. Currently Dr. Evans is a laser engineer at Continuum.
Mark Nandor B.S., Harvey Mudd College, 1994
M.S., The Ohio State University, 1997
Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 1999
While still part of the Van Woerkom clan, Dr. Nandor obtained high-resolution (in kinetic energy and intensity) argon photoelectron spectra, and compared these to single-electron argon calculations developed by Dr. Harm Geert Muller, of FOM. Currently, he is teaching mathematics at The Wellington School.
