D-branes as solitons: an algebraic approach

Emil Martinec (Chicago)

Abstract

The dynamics of string theory often simplifies upon taking extreme limits of the parameters in the theory. A strong magnetic field facilitates the study of D-branes by turning the spatial coordinates into noncommutative operators. I will show how the properties of branes emerge from the operator algebraic structure of the classical field theory, through a variety of examples.
