In this talk, I present a new mechanism for heavy hadron production that is supplementary to the conventional fragmentation mechanism. In this perturbative recombination mechanism, a heavy quark combines with a light parton from the hard-scattering process and they subsequently hadronize into the heavy hadron. It can be calculated within perturbative QCD up to a few nonperturbative constants. The phenomenological implications of this mechanism for charm and bottom production will be discussed.
