Spatial non-uniformity and branes

Abstract

I present two systems, motivated by string/M theory constructions, which exhibit spontaneous breaking of translation invariance. The first example is a non-commutative scalar field theory; the second is a black hole in AdS with a large N field theory dual. Time permitting, I may discuss a third system which may exhibit similar behavior: the quantum Hall soliton of Bernevig, Brodie, Susskind, and Toumbas.
