String Bit Models

Oren Bergman (Harvard University)

Abstract

We attempt to reformulate superstring theory as a Galilean
matrix field theory of point particles (string-bits) in one less
dimension, in which strings arise as polymer bound states.
From this point of view of strings, Poincare invariance and an
additional dimension appear as effective low-energy phenomena.
We also begin to address the question of the transverse size
of strings in the context of string-bit models.
