Detecting the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background

Abstract

I will introduce a new proposal (Beacom and Vagins, hep-ph/0309300) for event-by-event tagging of electron antineutrinos in Super-Kamiokande. This is the only known practical technique for detection of the diffuse supernova neutrino background, which comes from all previous core collapse supernovae in the universe. Besides being an important test of supernova models and neutrino properties, this could lead to the first detection of neutrinos from cosmological distances.
