In the last few years there has been a lot of excitement over the emergence of a new and potentially revolutionary computing technology that exploits the basic principles of quantum mechanics. Quantum computers can, in theory, rapidly solve problems that are intractable with a conventional computer. However there are many technical problems which must be overcome before this promise can be fulfilled. I will talk about why these devices will be so powerful, and describe some of the various efforts that are being made to build one.
