The combination of magnetism with nitride semiconductors allows the possibility of future spin-electronic-photonic devices in ultra-violet light-emitting systems. To explore complex magnetic structures which occur in these materials, ultra-high resolution (nanoscale) probing is very important. I will present some work involving the use of spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to study atomic-scale magnetism; I will also discuss some systems in which we aim to control magnetism at the nanoscale.
