The VD is a drift chamber with hexagonal cell structure.
This means, the electric field lines are shaped closely to the ideal cylindrical case, but there is less material which could scatter particles and worsen the resolution.

showing the inner cathode of the VD,
one of the end plates,
holding the signal wires,
and the pins connecting the wires to the ``outside world''.
The end plate is shown also in the left picture.
This is how the VD looks without the cables and support structures at both ends.
