Standard Model of Particle Physics -- Fall 2007
Are you curious about the fundamental nature of the matter and forces in our universe?
Do you want to learn what the Higgs particle is before it is discovered at the Large Hadron Collider?
Do you want to be able to understand (and perhaps even participate in)
the other new fundamental discoveries that will be made in the next
decade?
Then this course may be what you are looking for.
Instructor: Prof. Eric Braaten
- office: M2038 Physics Research Building
email: braaten(AT)mps.ohio-state.edu
phone: 688-4228 (office) or 326-4073 (home)
office hours: just stop by, or make an appointment
- Textbook: C. Burgess and G. Moore, The Standard Model: A Primer (Cambridge University Press), Chapters 1-7
- Supplementary text: Particle Data Group, Particle Physics Booklet (2006 edition; condensed report; about 300 pages)
- You can order a free copy of the booklet at http://pdg.lbl.gov/cgi-bin/pdgmail/edit.pl.
- Lectures: Tuesday and Thursday, 12:30 - 2:18 pm, Aviation 115
- The second hour will sometimes be spent in Physics Research Building 2005.
- Homework: problems from Burgess and Moore, due each week on Friday.
- Late homework can be handed in for 50% credit but will not be graded.
- Weekly email: must be sent to the instructor each week before noon on Monday.
