Helpful Tips from the OSU Advising Staff
It is important for you to be aware that there are resources available to assist you in your course work. The following are some helpful tips for your success if you are having difficulty with your classes.
- Meet with your professor as soon as possible. Professors can help you to determine what areas you need to strengthen in order to improve your performance in the course.
- Go to the Academic Skills Center in Room 220, Morrill Hall. Not only does Academic Skills provide assistance in courses like science and math, they are also available to help you in most other subject areas. If they do not have a tutor for the course, they will do everything they can to find someone. Also, Academic Skills can help you if you are having difficulty writing a paper. Academic Skills is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..
- If needed, make an appointment with your academic advisor. You and your advisor can discuss academic problems, making referrals where appropriate. Appointments can be made in Room 166 or by calling the number listed above, ext. 6334. Each advisor has walk-in times each week and will take walk-ins all day on one day a quarter. Please check to see when your advisor is available.
- Take a look at your priorities. College life can be stressful and hectic, especially if you are working a large number of hours. Have you left enough time in your schedule to study? Studies show that students who get good grades spend at least two hours studying for every hour in class.
- Lastly, if you speak to your instructor and there is no hope for passing the class, please make sure that you withdraw from the course by the Seventh Friday of the quarter. The last day to withdraw from a course (without a W) is 9 October 1998. The last day to withdraw from a course (with a W on your record) is 6 November 1998. June Coen can drop courses off your schedule. If you are a student receiving Financial Aid, please speak with a member of the Financial Aid staff before dropping the course.
