What is the difference between ionic and covalent bonding??
Gordons solution will appear here
Ionic bonds involve actual transfer of an electron from one atom to another and subsequent electric attraction. This gives the electron-giving atom the opportunity to strip away one or more electrons above a closed shell, leaving a closed shell, and the receiving atom the opportunity to add electrons until it reaches a closed shell. The closed shell configuration is more stable--it has a lower energy than the atom by itself. Covalent bonds arise when electrons are shared between atoms in order that each atom have something akin to a closed shell.
