Content focus for Winter Quarter: Assessing Inquiry Teaching

Spring Quarter 2009

(March 30, 2009 to June 11, 2009)

5 credit hours

 

Purpose:

To support Grant Middle School teachers in developing content expertise and reforming teaching and learning to reflect inquiry approaches in concert with district initiatives. This course involves approximately 60 contact hours, which include:

 

Team level planning and assessment meetings:

 

 1.5 hours per week of grade level or school level discussions to focus on analyzing classroom inquiry teaching and learning strategies and/or to support team collaboration in the development and assessment of inquiry teaching using FOSS and other learning activities.

 

Total: approximately 18 hours

 

Classroom visitation with OSU coaches:

 

Three to four classroom visitations including observation and follow up discussion:

 

Total: approximately 6 hours

 

Professional on-line discussions:

 

Discussions to share, discuss, and collaborate on developing inquiry science teaching and learning. Participants should view this interaction as their professional contribution to the goals of the project based upon personal action research in their classroom. Offering suggestions and responding to others ideas are important. Minimum time for on-line commitment: 2 hours per week.

 

Total: approximately 22 hours

 

Individual research project:

 

By 10 June, prepare and email individually to Gordon and Bill a 2 page minimum paper that articulates how you have grown as a teacher and what you want to do for next year

 

Total: approximately 15 hours

 

 

Grade distribution:

 

Quality of professional contribution to grade-level and school-level science teams (25 points)

 

Participation in team meetings (25 points)

 

Curriculum Alignment (10 points)

Grant needs to work on the articulation of the scope and sequence of middle school science in K-12 education. Part of the grade will reflect your contribution to that process.

 

Individual response paper (10 points)

90+: A-, A

We have been told by Carol that you are committed to working for Marion City Schools for the four days after school technically ends. Therefore, instead of the originally intended 9 June through 12 June, we must change the summer program to run the subsequent week, 15 June through 18 June.
