Undergraduate Physics at The Ohio State University
Graduation With Honors
Physics and Engineering Physics Majors have the opportunity to graduate with various honors.
Graduation Honors for Art and Sciences Physics Majors
- with distinction: minimum 3.3 cumulative grade-point average, 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University, successful defense of an honors thesis or project, and successful completion of any departmental grade-point, course-work, and examination requirements.
- with honors in the Arts and Sciences: minimum cumulative 3.3 grade-point average, 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University, and completion of an approved Honors Contract.
- cum laude: 3.5-3.69 cumulative grade-point average and completion of 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University.
- magna cum laude: 3.7-3.89 cumulative grade-point average and completion of 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University.
- summa cum laude: minimum 3.9 cumulative grade-point average and completion of 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University.

Graduation Honors for Engineering Physics Students
- with distinction:
You can complete an honors thesis project, which must be arranged through the College of Engineering before the
student's final quarter. Students who chose this option wil graduate "With Distinction" in their major.
- with honors in Engineering:
Honors students may choose this option. To participate, you need at least 40 credits taken at Ohio State for a
letter grade, at least 10 of which are Honors courses. You must also have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.40, and you
must submit your application 3 quarters prior to graduation. If all these requirements are met, you can
graduate with honors in Engineering.
- cum laude: 3.5-3.69 cumulative grade-point average and c
ompletion of 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University.
- magna cum laude: 3.7-3.89 cumulative grade-point average
and completion of 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University.
- summa cum laude: minimum 3.9 cumulative grade-point average and
completion of 90 graded hours at The Ohio State University.
