DESCRIPTION: GRASP (Girls Reaching to Achieve in Sports and Physics) is a camp intended to expose middle school age girls to science in a unique, sports centered environment. Together with the faculty, students, and staff of the physics department, Women in Physics will host five days of interactive activities to demonstrate their love of physics and to inspire middle school age girls to pursue the physical sciences.
Mornings will consist of sessions with select faculty from the Physics Department at The Ohio State University. These faculty will do demonstrations to show the breadth of physics: from making microwave plasmas to levitating trains. There will be an emphasis on showing how physics governs everyday phenomena. For example: why does a skater spin faster when she pulls her arms in, or why a cyclist doesn't fall when taking a banked turn. The afternoons will be spent experimenting with the physics and observing physical laws by doing activities such as skating, swimming, and playing basketball. Ohio State undergraduate and graduate students will be present at all sessions to help supervise and share their passion for physics with the girls.
Note: GRASP is a science camp, not a sports camp. The focus is not to make participants better soccer or basketball players. The focus is to increase awareness of physics in everday life and to inspire participants to consider a career in science or engineering. Interested persons should fill out the on-line application form. Link is at the top of this page. If accepted, a registration fee will be required.
