The Origins of Lattice Gauge Theory
Kenneth G. Wilson
The Ohio State University
The initial focus of this talk is an anecdotal account of the history underlying my 1974 article entitled "Confinement of Quarks." The account continues with related work of mine in the 1960's. I end the talk with a plea for lattice gauge researchers and high energy experimentalists to be alert for unexpected scalar or vector colored particles that are currently invisible to experimentalists yet could start to spoil the agreement of lattice gauge computations with experiment as these computations become steadily more accurate. The talk as a whole is informed by my experiences with research on the history of science, including a three-months fellowship at the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology at MIT.
