Duality Symmetry: The Case of the Theory That Worked Too Well

Dan Shahar

Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel

Near quantum phase transitions, in which a quantum system abruptly changes its ground state in response to a change of an external parameter, electronic systems exhibit remarkable symmetries that relate the properties of one phase to those measured in the other. In this talk I will demonstrate the existence of these symmetries and argue their relevance to the charge-flux duality symmetry theoretically suggested for such systems.
