Professor Gary Steigman Elected to APS Post
Gary Steigman, professor of Physics and Astronomy was recently elected Vice Chair of the American Physical Society's Forum on International Physics. The FIP is a voluntary association of APS members who are particularly interested in the international aspects of physics. The forum has established a "grassroots" image by launching programs such as international book and equipment exchanges and travel grants.
This honor is one of many bestowed upon Steigman. He has been named a University Distinguished Scholar at OSU and was awarded the Humboldt Senior Scientist Award by the University of Munich and the Max-Planck Institute for Physics. Since receiving his Ph.D. from New York University in 1968, Dr. Steigman has taught physics and astronomy courses at numerous institutions, including Yale, Stanford, University of Chicago, and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he has been a regular guest lecturer at the Instituto Geofisico e Astronomico of the Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil for the past 16 years.
