Norman Gearhart ( M.S. '69, Ph.D, '73) and Carolyn Piper Gearhart have named a faculty office (Room 2144) in the Physics Research Building, in honor of Professor Emeritus Hershel J. Hausman.
Professor Hausman joined the physics faculty of The Ohio State University in 1952 having earned B.S. and M.S. degrees at Carnegie Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. degree in Physics at the University of Pittsburgh. During most of his first decade here he served as supervisor of the cyclotron laboratory. In addition to being a superb classroom teacher, he was supervisor of the new Van de Graaff Laboratory from 1962 until his retirement in 1989. The primary foci of his research and that of the more than twenty students earning Ph.D. and/or Master Degrees with him were: nuclear scattering problems, nuclear reaction mechanisms, and nuclear capture reactions for a large variety of nuclei.
The award was received by Prof. Hausman's son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Herb and Laura Hausman in a ceremony on October 10, 2008. Participating in the event were (pictured left to right): Prof. Emeritus William Riley, Mary Riley, Prof. Emeritus William Saam, Margy Saam, Chair, James Beatty, Carolyn Piper Gearhart, Prof. Tom Humanic, Dr. Norman Gearhart, Dr. Laura Hausman, Dr. Herb Hausman, Prof. Evan Sugarbaker.
