Spin: Materials and Tools for Next Generation Computers

P. Chris Hammel

Departments of Physics and Electrical and Computer Engineering, OSU

Information processing is central to the American economy. Currently based on manipulation of electronic charge, it must evolve in fundamental ways if it is to continue to grow in performance and importance. Fundamental limits to miniaturization and challenges of energy and heat extraction must be addressed in the near future. Exploiting the spin of the electron and integrating magnetic materials into charge based electronics offers a route toward new computing paradigms with enhanced properties. I will discuss some of the approaches and tools that will play a role in exploring this opportunity.
