The Fast Development of Science and Education in China
------An Example of Peking University

Qihuang Gong

Peking University

China, as a developing country with the fastest growing on economies, has given the world's fastest-growing support of scientific R&D in recently years. The recent investment on science and education with extensive data will be reviewed. As a detailed example, I will focus on the recent development of Peking University, one of the best schools in China. Starting from 1998, when Chinese government initiated the "985" project, Peking University obtained the special support of RMB 1.8 billion within 5 years and then the same amount for the later 5 years. Together with the rapid increase in R&D fund to PKU, it reflects a clear understanding by top Chinese leaders that education and science (and technology) are critical to their nation's future. At the end of my talk, the scientific activities in my own group will be presented.
