Understanding Flight: Newton Reigns in Aerodynamics!

Scott Eberhardt

Boeing

Lift and drag on a wing are direct applications of Newton's three laws. Using Newton's laws a consistent and intuitive description of flight will be presented. In the physical description that will be presented, you will not only understand lift, but learn about the power curve, how to make wings more efficient and even get a glimpse of the physics behind jet engines. The presenter was a professor of aeronautics at the University of Washington for 20 years and is now a lead airplane designer in New Airplane Product Development at the Boeing Company.
