CP Violation and the Neutral K System in the Grand Scheme of Things

Brad Cox

University of Virginia

The neutral K system since its discovery in the Nobel prize experiment of Cronin and Fitch in 1964 until recently has provided the only window on the strange phenomenon of CP violation. This phenomenon which is related to time reversal violation and to matter antimatter differences through the CPT theorem is an essential element in the Sakarov scenario that explains the disappearance of primeval antimatter from the universe.

The KTeV experiment at Fermilab, among several other measurements, has observed new CP violation effects in KL decays of both the direct and indirect variety and has determined that CP violation takes place in the weak interaction. The KTeV measurements of each type of CP violation will be discussed.
