Attosecond light pulses from high harmonics

Pierre Agostini

CEA Saclay

Atoms irradiated by intense ultrashort infrared laser pulses emit a broad comb of harmonics in the XUV range. This spectrum forms, in principle, an ideal basis for the Fourier synthesis of sub-femtosecond or “attosecond” pulses. Such pulses can be used to studying electronic dynamics deep inside atoms and molecules directly in the time domain, with attosecond resolution. The physics of the harmonic emission implies the existence of an intensity-dependent phase for each Fourier component of the nonlinear dipole. In this talk, I review the effects of this phase and its consequences on the limits of attosecond pulses.
