Topological Defects in the Lab and Cosmos

Tanmay Vachaspati

Case Western Reserve University

Topological defects have been studied in a vast array of systems including superfluids such as Helium-3 and in the context of cosmology. After introducing the theoretical ideas behind topological defects, I will describe recent progress in the study of vortices in Helium-3 and the constraints that astronomical observations impose on the existence of superheavy topological defects in the universe.
