Chiral symmetry versus the lattice

Fascinating non-perturbative issues entwine lattice gauge theory, quantum anomalies, and chiral symmetry. After briefly reviewing the importance of chiral symmetry in particle physics, I discuss how anomalies complicate lattice regularization. A particularly elegant scheme has recently emerged for exploring this physics. This involves an auxiliary extra space-time dimension, with our physical world being a four dimensional interface.
