With heavy heart and long soul searching, I decided to move away from my path in HEP research toward a research that would allow certain opportunities for community involvement. For this reason I decided to enter medical school. It turns out there are hundreds of Ph.D students every year that do the same, so this may be an option for some people.
Advice to students:
This may be obvious to some, but wasn't totally obvious to me: if you are looking at this at the beginning of your career make sure you view your career top-down. Honestly ask yourself what you want to do and what you need to do to get there as opposed to concentrating on the next class to take and the next exam to ace.
