Graduate Student Machine Shop

home

The Graduate Student Machine Shop (GSMS) is managed by the Main Machine Shop Supervisor and is supervised on a part-time, as needed basis by rotating staff from this team.

The shop is located in Smith Laboratory, Room 0064.

The shop regular hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30-11:30 and 12:30-4:30.

The shop is available to all Department of Physics graduate students, staff, and faculty working on University/Physics Department projects.

Users who have received training, demonstrated technical proficiency, and exhibited responsible behavior are granted access to the facility on a 24 / 7 / 365 basis - provided a second person is present in the room “buddy system”, thus allowing support of research needs at any time.

The department views access to the student shop as a privilege to the student and reserves the right to deny access to individuals who have not sufficiently demonstrated their skill or who have not successfully completed the department sponsored training course and required documentation.  Faculty approval / sponsorship and a demonstrated research need are also mandatory prerequisites to access.

Complete the forms below and contact the supervisor to apply for shop access and/or to schedule training.
